Snow Plow Driver Saves 2 Loose Dogs ‘Buried’ in Snow While Working During New York Blizzard

In an inspiring incident during a severe blizzard in New York, a snowplough driver displayed remarkable bravery and compassion by rescuing two dogs that had become lost in treacherous conditions. Kenny McGowan, an employee of the Department of Public Works, was actively clearing the roads in Babylon when he spotted the frightened pups running along the Sunrise Highway.

McGowan recounted the moment when he noticed the first dog out of the corner of his eye while working. As he turned his vehicle around to take a closer look, he quickly realised that another dog was nearby, also in distress. “I immediately put my sirens on and stayed right behind them,” he told reporters, highlighting his instinctive drive to protect the animals.

His connection to animals strengthened his resolve, as he reflected on his own responsibilities as both a pet lover and a father. “I was going to do whatever I had to do to stop these dogs from getting hurt,” he said, demonstrating not only his dedication but also thoughtful empathy. To secure their safety, McGowan parked his truck strategically to shield the dogs from oncoming traffic while trying to coax them to safety.

The situation escalated when the dogs fled into the median, where deep snow made their escape even more perilous. McGowan recounts how the two dogs appeared to comfort each other, with one dog lying atop the other as they burrowed into the snow. He quickly realised that they shared a close bond, likely being sisters.

With McGowan’s quick thinking, he enlisted the help of colleague Jason Koza as well as various Good Samaritans who were also on the scene. Their joint efforts successfully led to the dogs being rounded up and transported to a nearby animal shelter, a crucial move given the extreme weather conditions. According to kennel attendant Danny Deutsch, “If nobody would have found them, they could have frozen,” underscoring the urgency of the situation.

Upon arrival at the shelter, the dogs were assessed for microchips to identify their owners. Angela Diagson, a kennel attendant, revealed that while one dog could be scanned traditionally, the second dog’s microchip was located in an unexpected area. The shelter promptly reached out to the family associated with the microchip, leading to the joyous reunion of the dogs with their owners the following day.

The circumstances surrounding the dogs going loose in the blizzard remain unclear, although their family expressed profound relief and gratitude for their safe return. McGowan reflected on the experience, asserting that his actions were something anyone would have done under similar conditions. “Everybody should think that way … It’s somebody else’s pet,” he stated, emphasising the importance of community responsibility and empathy towards animals in need.
