Dave Grohl, the frontman of the Foo Fighters, has opened up about the band’s decision to part ways with drummer Josh Freese in a recent interview. Following the passing of longtime drummer Taylor Hawkins in March 2022, Freese joined the band in May 2023, serving as a replacement during a difficult transition period for the group. However, the partnership came to an end in May 2025 when Freese was let go, a move that left him feeling “shocked and disappointed.”

In his conversation with Zane Lowe on Apple Music, Grohl reflected on the complexities surrounding the departure of Hawkins and the challenge of finding a suitable replacement. Hawkins had been a crucial part of the Foo Fighters for 25 years, and his loss created a void not easily filled. Grohl described Hawkins not just as a remarkable drummer but as a cherished friend and an irreplaceable member of the band, making Freese’s task daunting from the outset.
Grohl remarked, “Continuing on after Taylor was really complicated, not just for us, but for any drummer that was going to come in to fill his shoes.” He praised Freese’s professionalism and extensive experience, noting his previous collaborations with artists like Michael Bublé and The Offspring, emphasising the high expectations that came with stepping into Hawkins’ role.
“The first year and a half touring with Josh was fantastic,” Grohl said, highlighting the positive experiences the band shared during their time together. “We had a blast, and the shows were great,” he added. This period of touring was marked by enjoyment and camaraderie, but ultimately led to a reflective pause for the band.
After completing their tour, the Foo Fighters took around seven months off to consider their future direction. It was during these discussions that the decision was made to move on. Grohl described the moment they called Freese to inform him of their choice, stating, “We said, ‘Hey, man, that was awesome. That was such a blast. Thank you so much. But we’re going to move on and find another drummer.’” The band opted against making a public announcement at the time, choosing instead to maintain a level of privacy regarding the decision.
Freese later expressed that he felt the music of the Foo Fighters did not resonate with him, a sentiment that Grohl acknowledged as significant. The split seemed amicable, and both parties have embarked on new paths since their separation. Following his departure from the Foo Fighters, Freese returned to play with Nine Inch Nails, a band he first joined in 2005.
In the wake of this transition, the Foo Fighters welcomed Ilan Rubin as their new drummer. Rubin, known for his work with Nine Inch Nails and Paramore, has reinvigorated the band, with Grohl stating, “It feels like we are a band again.” This new phase for the Foo Fighters comes amidst the ongoing challenge of honouring Hawkins’ legacy while evolving their sound and lineup.
Grohl fondly remembered Hawkins during the interview, describing the impact he had on the band and its members. “We wake up in the morning and everybody just texts about how much we miss him and how the world’s not the same without him,” he shared. The dedication to honouring Hawkins is evident in the daily conversations the band members have about him, ensuring his memory continues to play a role in their journey.
As the Foo Fighters move forward with Rubin, they prepare to release their upcoming album, “Your Favourite Toy.” The blend of nostalgia and new beginnings marks a significant chapter for the band as they navigate life after Hawkins, with Grohl highlighting their commitment to preserving his spirit while charting a new course for their music.
