His mother, Aida Svelto, recounted the harrowing event: “Sal went out the gate like he always does before me. Then I heard a scream, and Sal came running back. He grabbed onto my legs, then I screamed because I saw a big, giant coyote.”

In the video, the coyote can be seen closely trailing the toddler as he fled back to the safety of his home. Once inside, the creature retreated, disappearing down the driveway. This unusual interaction has left the Bessemer family relieved but alarmed.

Salvo’s father, Leonard Bessemer, described his disbelief when he learned about the incident. “Aida texted me, saying, ‘A coyote just chased Sal,’ and I was like, ‘How?’ I checked the cameras. I was flabbergasted,” he shared. He noted that their neighbourhood usually only sees coyotes passing through the streets and not directly interacting with residents.

After the incident, Aida expressed her surprise and unease, admitting, “I really didn’t feel nervous. Now I’m nervous. This one was bigger and scarier, and I just really didn’t think that he would go after a kid. It’s one thing to see them go after a chihuahua or rabbit, but he’s pretty big, so it was scary.”

Kevin McManus, director of PR and communications for Pasadena Humane, provided insight into the animal’s behaviour during this period, warning residents to remain vigilant. “During the mating season, coyotes are more likely to be seen.
