Tyrese Haliburton, shooting guard for the Indiana Pacers, is currently grappling with yet another medical challenge as he recovers from a serious injury. Following a ruptured Achilles tendon sustained during Game 7 of the 2025 NBA Finals in June, Haliburton has been diagnosed with shingles, a painful condition that can occur when the varicella-zoster virus is reactivated within the body.
The news was shared by the Pacers’ head coach, Rick Carlisle, during a recent press conference. Carlisle confirmed that Haliburton will be required to spend a significant amount of time away from the team—approximately two to three weeks—as he recuperates from this latest development.

Shingles is characterised by a painful, blistering rash, and is most commonly caused when the dormant virus from a past chickenpox infection re-emerges. The US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) notes that the condition is more prevalent among older individuals, but it can affect younger people as well. Carlisle highlighted the severity of Haliburton’s condition, saying, “It’s a very painful thing. He will make a full recovery, but this happened over the last few days.”
The coach provided insight into Haliburton’s circumstances, explaining that the young star had been experiencing unusual symptoms while the team was in Washington, D.C., prompting him to return to Indianapolis for further evaluation. Nevertheless, Carlisle expressed optimism, stating, “We certainly wish him a speedy recovery. It’s a unique case, but I talked to him a few times and he’s always in a good mood, so he’ll get through it.”
This setback comes as Haliburton is already facing the arduous task of rehabilitating from his Achilles injury. The team has confirmed that he will not participate in the 2025-26 season as he focuses on his recovery. Previously, Haliburton was a beacon of hope for the Pacers, finishing the last season with impressive averages of 17.5 points, 8.8 assists, and 3.7 rebounds per game. His performances in the playoffs, particularly his ability to sink critical late-game shots, earned him recognition as a standout player.
In a candid moment on the “Mind the Game” podcast, hosted by basketball icons LeBron James and Steve Nash, Haliburton provided an update on his recovery. He expressed that the experience of healing from his injury has prompted personal growth. “I understand it is allowing me to grow in different ways,” he said. In a light-hearted tone, he elaborated on the changes in his physique during his recovery, revealing that he has gained weight in an effort to become more physically imposing on the court.
Reflecting on his eating habits during this time, Haliburton joked, “I’ve been drowning my sorrows in cookies and ice cream and stuff.” However, he clarified that this indulgence wasn’t entirely accidental, noting that he aims to enhance his physicality in order to draw more fouls and secure additional free throws.
Looking ahead, Haliburton’s return to competitive play may not come until the next season, but he is attempting to remain positive in spite of his circumstances. Outside of basketball, the player recently celebrated a significant personal milestone; he announced his engagement to his long-time girlfriend, Jade Jones, in July 2025.
As Haliburton navigates these challenging times, he has garnered the support of both teammates and fans alike. His resilience in the face of adversity has prompted hope for a successful recovery, and many are eagerly anticipating his return to the court. The Pacers will undoubtedly miss his talents this season, but they remain optimistic about his future contributions to the team once he is fully recovered.
In the meantime, Haliburton’s journey serves as a reminder of the unpredictability of professional sports and the importance of resilience in both health and athletic performance.
