Fishermen Stumble Upon Body in the Bayou, and Authorities Worry a Vulnerable Person Could Have Been Victimized

Human remains, believed to belong to a woman, were discovered last week in a bayou in Acadia Parish, Louisiana. Authorities are indicating that the death may have occurred recently, though the investigation is still ongoing.

The Acadia Parish Sheriff’s Office responded to the report last Friday, February 20, regarding the grim find at Bayou Queue de Tortue, located near Highway 13 in southern Acadia Parish. According to Sheriff K.P. Gibson, the remains were uncovered by two fishermen who were exploring the waterway.

“We had two guys who were fishing in the bayou and apparently came across what appeared to be and obviously was a body within the water,” Sheriff Gibson stated in an interview with local CBS affiliate KLFY. Deputies quickly arrived on the scene to confirm and recover the body.

At this point, authorities believe the remains are those of a woman, but official identification has not yet been determined. Due to the condition of the body, which authorities say had not reached a skeletal state, establishing an identity is proving to be challenging. “We are waiting for a forensic examination to provide more clarity,” said the sheriff.

He speculated, “Our thought might be maybe someone who was elderly or maybe somebody who lived alone. Our concern could be — could it be a person that had memory problems?”

In a follow-up statement, the sheriff’s office mentioned that the condition of the remains indicates that the individual had not been in the water for an extended period. “This would have to be somebody who has been reported missing here in the last several weeks to a month at most,” Gibson explained. He estimated that the body had likely been in the water for between one to three weeks, rather than being an individual who had been deceased for years.
