A tragic incident on Indiana’s Interstate 65 has resulted in the death of a young emergency medical technician (EMT), Rylee Hanson, following a head-on collision. The crash occurred in the early hours of Saturday, February 21, around 1:50 a.m., sparking a significant response from local emergency services.

According to the Indiana State Police, preliminary investigations indicate that a 29-year-old woman was driving a silver 2022 Toyota in the wrong direction, travelling southbound in the northbound lanes of the interstate. The vehicle collided head-on with a 2016 Ford that was being driven by 20-year-old Rylee Hanson. The impact of the crash was severe, resulting in extensive damage to both vehicles.
Unfortunately, emergency responders pronounced Hanson dead at the scene. The Hobart Fire Department, which attended the confrontation, reported that their crews encountered a “tragic” situation upon arrival, necessitating immediate life-saving operations.
The driver of the Toyota was extracted from her vehicle and subsequently airlifted to a hospital in Chicago, where she remains in critical condition. Officers observed signs suggesting that the Toyota driver may have been impaired at the time of the crash, although charges have yet to be filed as the investigation remains ongoing. Additionally, a passenger in Hanson’s Ford sustained serious injuries and was transferred to a hospital for treatment.
Hanson, a resident of Hobart, was engaged in her studies to become a fully qualified EMT as part of the Class of 2024 from Kankakee Valley High School. Following her untimely death, the Jasper County EMS expressed their condolences through social media, emphasising the profound loss felt by her family, friends, classmates, and colleagues.
“Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with Rylee’s family, friends, classmates, and all who had the privilege of knowing and learning alongside her,” the Jasper County EMS stated. “We also extend our support to the students, faculty, and staff of Kankakee Valley High School, her fellow EMT graduates of the Class of 2024, and our partners at Superior Ambulance during this difficult time,” they added.
Hanson worked for Superior Ambulance in Merrillville and was remembered fondly by her peers and mentors. The EMS agency highlighted the commitment and compassion required for those in the Emergency Medical Services field. “Those who choose a path in EMS do so with a heart for helping others—a commitment to compassion, service, and community. Rylee’s dedication to that calling will always be remembered,” they noted.
