A man with autism who went missing for close to a month has been reunited with his mother, who expressed her gratitude towards the local homeless community for aiding her son during his disappearance.

August Beckwith, aged 29, vanished on November 17 and was last spotted in the Sugarhouse neighbourhood of Salt Lake City two days afterwards, as per information shared by the National Autism Association. Reports indicated that Beckwith, who is nonverbal, was going through a severe mental health crisis at the time of his disappearance, rendering him extremely vulnerable and unable to seek help.
According to his mother, Lori, Beckwith ran away down Wakara Way after they had just left a local hospital. Thankfully, August was sighted at the Apollo Burger in Taylorsville on December 10, leading to his identification through a fingerprint scanner by officers from the Taylorsville Police Department.
The Utah Department of Public Safety confirmed on December 11 that August had been safely reunited with his mother. Lori acknowledged the assistance provided by members of the local homeless community in ensuring her son’s survival during the three-plus weeks he was missing.
In a heartfelt Facebook post, Lori expressed her gratitude towards the homeless individuals who supported August during his time on the streets, highlighting their kindness and unwavering efforts to locate him. She emphasised, “Some of the most profound generosity came from those with the least to give.”
Furthermore, Lori extended her appreciation to the police and the numerous volunteers who dedicated their time to search for August, as well as friends and family who stood by her during the ordeal. She reflected on the silent battles faced by many families dealing with mental health issues, underscoring the importance of support and understanding in such situations.
Lori hopes that August’s story will serve as a source of inspiration and compassion, especially during the holiday season. She urged others to show kindness towards those struggling with mental health challenges, whether in the streets or within households, emphasising the significant impact of compassion in such circumstances.
As the heartwarming reunion between August and his mother unfolds, the profound impact of community solidarity and empathy shines through, serving as a reminder of the strength found in collective support and kindness. In times of adversity, acts of generosity and care can truly make a difference, bridging gaps and fostering hope for those in need.
