The parents of a teenage girl who was at the heart of a sexual assault case in Oklahoma have broken their silence after the judge spared her ex-boyfriend from prison time. The case drew widespread attention and outrage as 18-year-old Jesse Butler faced multiple charges of attempted rape, sexual battery, strangulation, and domestic assault for incidents that occurred when he was 16 and 17 years old.

Butler, arrested in Stillwater, Oklahoma, in March, initially faced the possibility of prison time as he was charged as an adult. However, to the dismay of the victim’s family, the judge granted him youthful offender status, leading to a sentencing of community service, rehabilitation, and counselling instead of incarceration.
In an emotional interview with Nightline’s JuJu Chang, the victim’s parents, Ivonne and Austin, expressed their disappointment with the outcome, believing that the punishment did not reflect the severity of the crimes their daughter endured. They highlighted the lasting impact the assaults had on their daughter, Kate, who was just 16 years old at the time of the incidents.
Recounting how Butler, Kate’s first boyfriend, initially seemed kind and charming, the parents revealed their shock upon discovering their daughter’s ordeal. The assault left Kate traumatised, forcing her to complete her senior year of high school online and isolating her from her friends and usual teenage experiences like prom and graduation.
Ivonne and Austin now want to raise awareness among parents about the potential for intimate partner violence among teenagers. They emphasised that the consequences handed down to Butler—community service and counselling—felt insufficient given the nature of the crimes. Their attorney, Rachel Bussett, shared the sentiment, highlighting that there was a lack of accountability and admission of guilt from Butler.
Despite the setback, the family is pushing for justice, with Bussett filing a motion alleging that Kate’s rights were violated during the plea and sentencing proceedings. The district attorney’s office acknowledged consulting the victims’ families throughout the process but indicated that the result was expected.
As they continue to advocate for a more appropriate response to the assaults, Ivonne expressed hope that her daughter would someday be able to trust again and not let this experience define her view of relationships. The family’s story serves as a poignant reminder of the far-reaching consequences of intimate partner violence and the importance of seeking justice for victims.
The case underscores the complexities and challenges faced in addressing such sensitive issues in the legal system, prompting broader discussions around improving support and accountability for victims of assault. The journey towards healing and justice for Kate and others impacted by similar experiences remains ongoing, highlighting the need for continued awareness and advocacy in combatting sexual violence and promoting healthier relationships among young individuals.
