Dr. Oz has advised federal employees to practice portion control and eat less during the holiday season. As the administrator for the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), Dr. Mehmet Oz has been sending out a weekly bulletin titled “From the Administrator’s Desk” to around 6,000 federal employees. In a recent email titled “Crushing Cubicle Cravings,” he provided strategies to help employees make healthier choices, particularly during the festive season.

The former daytime talk show host emphasized the importance of setting intentions and deciding in advance how many treats to indulge in, encouraging employees to stick to that predetermined number. Dr. Oz suggested that employees do not need to try every cookie on the table and advised them to practice portion control by being mindful of their eating habits. His tips included using smaller plates, taking smaller portions, and eating more slowly by putting forks down between bites.

In addition to portion control, Dr. Oz recommended employees pay attention to their body’s cues and eat more mindfully. He even went as far as advising against ‘double-fisting’ food, suggesting that one hand should be kept free to shake hands with colleagues and friends during festive gatherings. The aim of these strategies is to help federal employees enjoy the holiday season without compromising their health and well-being.
Christopher Krepich, a spokesperson for the CMS, explained that Dr. Oz provided these tips because he understands the challenges of balancing a healthy lifestyle with a demanding job. The advice was intended to encourage the hardworking CMS team to stay healthy while continuing to ensure quality healthcare for millions of Americans. Dr. Mehmet Oz was appointed by President Donald Trump to oversee federal health insurance programs as the Administrator of CMS, reporting to Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.
Before his government role, Dr. Oz faced scrutiny for promoting unproven weight loss tips. In 2014, he testified before a Senate panel regarding his endorsement of unverified medical claims related to weight loss, including a green coffee bean extract touted as a “miracle in a bottle.” While he expressed belief in the product, he acknowledged the lack of scientific evidence to support such claims. Dr. Oz’s transition from a TV personality known for health advice to a government official overseeing critical healthcare programs reflects the complexity of his career journey.
As Dr. Oz continues to offer guidance on health and wellness to federal employees, his commitment to promoting healthier choices during the holiday season underscores the importance of mindful eating and self-care. The impact of his advice goes beyond individual behaviours, aiming to foster a culture of well-being within the federal workforce. By prioritising health and wellness, employees can maintain their productivity and effectiveness in their roles, contributing to the overall mission of providing quality healthcare to millions of Americans.
