In a devastating incident, two brothers met with a fatal end after plummeting through “thin ice” on a lake in Michigan. The Kalkaska County Sheriff’s Office revealed that deputies rushed to Island Lake, near Island Lake Road and Dockery Road, following reports of someone calling out for help on the lake on the night of Friday, December 6, just before 11 p.m.

Upon arrival, authorities found that a 22-year-old man, identified as Johnathan Brake, and two young boys aged 13 and 14 had fallen through the fragile ice on the lake. The 14-year-old managed to drag himself out of the icy water and raise the alarm for help. Fortunately, Brake’s girlfriend, who was searching for the trio, heard his cries and alerted the authorities.
The brave 14-year-old survivor was located on the ice and rescued by deputies from the sheriff’s office. He was later taken to Kalkaska Memorial Health Center, where he received treatment and was subsequently discharged. Tragically, Brake was not as lucky. Despite efforts to save his life, he was pronounced dead at the hospital after being retrieved from the water around 11:40 p.m.
The search for the younger brother, aged 13, proved to be a challenging task. His lifeless body was eventually recovered from seven to eight feet of water the following morning. Reports from UpNorthLive and Patch revealed that the deceased individuals were brothers, Johnathan Brake and the 13-year-old victim.
The emergency operation conducted by the Kalkaska Township Fire Department proved to be arduous, with Captain Kyle Jenkins highlighting the difficulties faced during the rescue mission. Jenkins underscored the risks involved, stating, “We’re in flotation suits, but making our way along that shoreline, you’re falling through that thin ice, you’re knee-deep in mud trying to climb back onto the ice.”
Following this tragic incident, the Whitewater Township Fire Department emphasised the unpredictability of ice conditions in the area. In a Facebook post, they reiterated the importance of ice safety, particularly near inlets, outlets, or areas with moving water, cautioning the public to stay off ice surfaces and keep children and pets away from shorelines.
This heartbreaking event serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by unstable ice formations, urging individuals to exercise caution and vigilance when venturing onto frozen bodies of water. The community mourns the untimely loss of these two brothers and emphasises the paramount importance of safety measures during winter activities.
