Countess Karen Spencer and Dr. Cat Jarman have reached a settlement in an ongoing lawsuit involving an alleged misuse of private information. The lawsuit was brought by Jarman against the Countess, accusing her of disclosing Jarman’s multiple sclerosis diagnosis. Norwegian archaeologist Jarman, who is in a relationship with Princess Diana’s brother Charles Spencer, filed the lawsuit in October 2024, alleging that her diagnosis was revealed to Charles, Althorp staff, and others without her consent.

A spokesperson for Karen, aged 53, confirmed the settlement news on December 8, following the publicized High Court judgment on Monday morning. The statement shared with PEOPLE mentioned that Karen accepted an offer to end the litigation without admitting unlawful conduct, stating that “Countess Spencer considers her position to have been fully vindicated.” The settlement involved no admission of liability or wrongdoing, with Earl Spencer ordered to cover legal costs exceeding £2 million and pay £4,500 in damages to Jarman.
Jarman, aged 43, expressed relief at being able to move forward after the settlement. She emphasized the importance of her right to decide how and when to share sensitive medical information, particularly as someone living with multiple sclerosis. Karen denied liability, asserting that any reference to Jarman’s condition was legitimate and justified. Legal representation for Karen was provided by David Sherborne, the same lawyer involved in Prince Harry’s litigation against a publisher.
Charles Spencer, the 9th Earl Spencer and younger brother of Princess Diana, announced his divorce from Karen, a Canadian philanthropist, in June 2024 after 13 years of marriage. The former couple shares a 13-year-old daughter, Charlotte Diana. Charles and Jarman first met during an archaeological dig at Althorp House in 2021 and later collaborated on a history podcast project in 2023 before confirming their romance in 2024.
Following the settlement, both parties expressed their hopes to bring an end to the matter. Jarman emphasized the necessity of protecting her privacy and career by taking legal action, while Karen maintained that her actions were justified. The resolution of the lawsuit marks a significant development in the ongoing personal and legal drama involving the Spencer family and their connections.
As the public awaits further details and reactions from all involved parties, the case serves as a reminder of the complexities and challenges that can arise in high-profile relationships and legal disputes. The settlement reflects a compromise between Karen Spencer, Charles Spencer’s estranged wife, and Dr. Cat Jarman, highlighting the importance of privacy rights and legal boundaries in personal matters.
