A groom’s magical wedding day took an unexpected turn when he ended up in the hospital instead of celebrating at his reception. Steven Weiss, 59, and Shawna Magence were about to partake in the Jewish wedding tradition of breaking the glass at their nuptials in Boca Raton, Fla on Nov. 16. However, a mishap occurred during this customary ritual, as reported by The Canadian Jewish News on Dec. 5.
Typically, the breaking of the glass symbolizes sealing the marriage, with the groom stomping on a glass wrapped in cloth to signify unity. Unfortunately, Weiss accidentally slashed his foot on a shard of glass while enthusiastically carrying out this ritual. Despite the injury, Magence mentioned that Weiss was so caught up in the moment that he didn’t feel any pain. She explained, “He was just excited to be married. He did not even realize what was going on.”

Paramedics rushed to the scene at the wedding venue in response to the accident. Weiss was swiftly attended to and placed on a gurney before being transported to the emergency vehicle. Even in this challenging situation, the groom maintained his positivity, as seen in a video where guests sang and applauded while he was wheeled out. Magence stood by her husband, providing support and comfort during this unexpected turn of events.

Although their time at the chuppah was cut short, the couple managed to carry out the required seven-minute Yichud ritual. The rabbi facilitated this ritual inside the ambulance, ensuring the completion of the wedding formalities amid the unfortunate circumstances. Eventually, Weiss received nine stitches on his foot at the hospital, while Magence returned to the reception to look after their guests single-handedly.
Despite the setback, the couple, who initially met in 2024, were determined to complete their wedding rites. They postponed their honeymoon briefly to ensure Weiss’s full recovery. Magence shared their plans to head off on their honeymoon adventure soon, mentioning, “He just got the stitches out. So let’s be clear. He’s going Sunday. So Mazel tov.”
The couple’s perseverance in the face of adversity showcases their commitment to each other and their shared journey. Despite the unexpected challenges, their love and determination prevailed, leading to a unique wedding story that they will cherish for a lifetime. Magence’s unwavering support and Weiss’s positivity throughout the ordeal highlight the strength of their bond, setting a beautiful example of overcoming obstacles together as a couple.
