The incident occurred at the 7900 block of Tysons One Place in Virginia, where two workers found themselves suspended above the ground due to a malfunction in their window-washing basket. Despite the precarious situation, the rescue mission was executed swiftly and efficiently by the FCFRD, with no injuries reported.
The window washers were stranded approximately 15 stories above the ground, cleaning the windows of the 22-story Tysons Tower. The building houses financial, consulting, and technology firms, making it a bustling hub of activity in the area. Rescue crews wasted no time in assessing the situation and devising a plan to bring the workers to safety.

Technical Rescue units carefully evaluated anchor options for rope systems, surveyed potential hazards, and considered wind conditions before initiating the rescue operation. The teams constructed twin-tension rope-lowering systems anchored to the building’s steel beams to facilitate the safe descent of the window washers.
The first rescue was completed around 10:07 a.m., with a controlled transition over the edge to reach one of the workers. Ensuring the worker’s safety, they were secured into the rope system and both individuals were lowered to the ground in a tower ladder bucket. The meticulous approach of the rescue teams reflected their expertise and commitment to a successful outcome.
Following the initial rescue, the rope systems were reset for a second operation, which concluded at 10:24 a.m. The FCFRD documented the entire process with photos and a video, showcasing the scale and precision of the rescue mission. Once the workers were safely retrieved, all equipment was recovered, and safety checks were performed to ensure no loose ends.
The FCFRD commended the technical rescue members for their professionalism and skill, emphasising that their timely intervention prevented any injuries. Grateful for the successful outcome, the organisation highlighted the importance of preparedness and expertise in handling such emergencies effectively.
This incident serves as a reminder of the risks that workers in high-rise buildings face daily, highlighting the crucial role of emergency response teams in ensuring their safety. The seamless coordination and swift action demonstrated by the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department saved the day, reaffirming their commitment to protecting and serving the community.
As we reflect on this heart-stopping rescue operation, it’s essential to appreciate the dedication and bravery of all those involved. Their quick thinking and expert execution undoubtedly made a significant difference in averting a potential disaster. The safety and well-being of individuals working at great heights remain a top priority, thanks to the diligence and professionalism of our emergency responders.
