The incident occurred when Carter’s westbound Subaru Outback crashed into a commercial motor vehicle and trailer operated by Rajinder Kumar, 32, which was blocking both lanes of travel in a jackknifed position. The crash took place around 9:30 p.m., with dark conditions and a lack of active emergency warning equipment cited as primary factors contributing to the collision.

Tragically, both Carter and Lower were pronounced dead at the scene, marking a devastating end to what should have been a joyous time for the young couple. Lower’s father, Tom Lower, revealed that the pair had recently tied the knot on November 8 and had spent their honeymoon at Disneyland before starting their journey back to Salem.

Rajinder Kumar, the operator of the jackknifed vehicle, was arrested on charges of criminally negligent homicide and reckless endangerment. The Oregon State Police confirmed that Kumar, who was reportedly uninjured in the incident, has since been placed in the Deschutes County Jail. Additionally, Kumar is now facing an Immigration and Customs Enforcement arrest detainer for allegedly being in the country illegally.
Deschutes County Judge Randy Miller approved a prosecutor’s request to increase Kumar’s bail from $100,000 to $250,000, highlighting the seriousness of the charges against him. Deputy District Attorney Caleb Staats hinted at the possibility of more severe charges in the future, emphasizing the need for justice to be served in light of the tragic loss of the newlyweds.
The heartbreaking news of the young couple’s untimely death has sent shockwaves through the community, with family, friends, and authorities all grappling with the devastating consequences of the crash. The circumstances surrounding the accident serve as a stark reminder of the importance of road safety and the need for vigilance when travelling, particularly during adverse conditions.
As the investigation into the crash continues and legal proceedings unfold, the memory of William Micah Carter and Jennifer Lynn Lower will be honoured by those who knew and loved them. The tragic incident serves as a poignant reminder of the fragility of life and the need for drivers to exercise caution and responsibility on the roads, in order to prevent such heart-wrenching events from reoccurring.
