The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has made an announcement that could affect travellers without a Real ID. Starting in February 2026, passengers without a Real ID (or Real ID-compliant form of identification) departing from U.S. airports will be required to pay a $45 fee. This fee is more than double the previously proposed cost of $18, as reported by The New York Times.

The $45 fee is intended to cover the costs associated with the newly introduced “TSA Confirm.ID,” which serves as a modernized alternative identity verification system. All travellers without a Real ID will need to obtain a TSA Confirm.ID before proceeding to the security screening line. The process of obtaining a TSA Confirm.ID will vary from airport to airport and is expected to result in longer wait times for passengers who require one.
Adam Stahl, the senior official performing the duties of deputy administrator for TSA, emphasised the importance of ensuring that everyone who flies is properly identified. While the majority of travellers already present acceptable identification such as REAL IDs and passports, the TSA aims to verify the identity of all passengers effectively.

For travellers who do not possess a Real ID and need to acquire a TSA Confirm.ID to travel, the TSA recommends paying the $45 fee online before arriving at the airport. It is noted that the fee is designed to address government-incurred costs, with the TSA anticipating that some passengers may have to pay the fee multiple times.

There are various alternative forms of identification that are acceptable to the TSA, including a U.S. passport, DHS trusted traveller cards, and permanent resident cards, among others. It is essential for travellers to be aware of these acceptable forms of identification to ensure a smooth and hassle-free travel experience.
This new policy by the TSA has raised concerns among travellers, especially regarding the increased fee for those without a Real ID. The impact of the policy on travellers, particularly in terms of wait times and additional costs, remains to be seen as it is set to be implemented in the coming year.
As travellers prepare for future trips, it is recommended to stay informed about the latest updates and requirements, including those related to identification and security measures. Ensuring compliance with TSA regulations will help travellers avoid any potential delays or issues during their journey.
The TSA’s announcement serves as a reminder of the evolving landscape of travel regulations and the importance of staying informed and prepared for any changes that may impact travel plans. Travellers are encouraged to plan ahead and make necessary arrangements to comply with the updated policies to facilitate a smooth travel experience.
