Princess Diana’s goddaughter, Domenica Lawson, is making headlines as she assists in the launch of a charity-run pub in Brighton. This unique establishment aims to provide young adults with learning disabilities valuable workplace experience in the hospitality industry. The initiative is spearheaded by Team Domenica, an organization established by Lawson’s mother, Rosa Monckton, with the sole purpose of expanding employment opportunities for individuals facing similar challenges.

The roots of this endeavour can be traced back to the unwavering support Diana provided to Monckton during Domenica’s formative years. The charity has since evolved from a single café to a network of businesses catering to approximately 100 trainees. In 2016, Domenica proudly expressed her dedication to exploring new avenues as she stood within a pioneering café designed to offer practical training and employment pathways to young people with learning disabilities.

Fast forward almost a decade, and Team Domenica is pushing boundaries by diversifying its ventures. The forthcoming charity-run pub, aptly named Café Domenica, symbolises a significant milestone in their journey. With the grand opening just around the corner, 30-year-old Domenica is poised to warmly welcome guests, including her culinary aunt, Nigella Lawson, on this auspicious occasion.
Born with Down syndrome, Domenica serves as the driving force behind Team Domenica’s mission. The organisation, under Monckton’s guidance, is dedicated to equipping young adults with learning disabilities with the essential skills and confidence needed to integrate into the workforce. Diana’s impact on Monckton’s family, particularly in nurturing Domenica, is a testament to the late princess’s enduring influence and compassion.
Monckton, now a Baroness, firmly believes that the hospitality sector is an ideal fit for Team Domenica’s trainees despite its inherent challenges. What began with training 20 candidates at the first café has blossomed into a comprehensive support system for around 100 students, with multiple cafés and a coffee roastery under their wing. The upcoming pub venture represents a natural progression in fulfilling their vision.
The North Star pub, situated in Brighton, serves as a beacon of hope for individuals seeking meaningful employment opportunities. The project has garnered support from various business partners, including Gavin George, a trustee and the former CEO of The Laine Pub Company. George underscores the importance of providing top-tier services through the pub, ensuring that the trainees gain practical experience that will prepare them for the workforce effectively.
As the countdown to the pub’s opening continues, the anticipation among supporters and community members is palpable. The collaborative efforts of Team Domenica, coupled with the unwavering dedication of individuals like Domenica Lawson, reflect a commitment to fostering inclusivity and empowerment within the hospitality industry. Princess Diana’s legacy lives on through initiatives that continue to uplift and transform lives, embodying a spirit of compassion and progress for all.
