Prince William, the Duke of Cambridge, embarked on a hectic schedule at the onset of a dynamic week for the British royal family. On Monday, December 1st, Prince William visited a major technology company and acknowledged the valuable contributions of innovative firms to the nation. This visit signalled the commencement of an eventful week for both Prince William and his wife, Kate Middleton, aged 43, who are set to host the German president and his spouse for a state visit on December 3rd. Following this, Princess Kate will host her annual Christmas carol service at Westminster Abbey on December 5th, an event attended by William and their three children — Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis — along with numerous other members of the royal family to show support for Kate.

During his visit to Newport, South Wales, Prince William delivered a keynote address at the Wales Investment Summit, emphasising how companies drive growth in conjunction with decarbonisation, environmentally-conscious job creation, and the green technology sector. With Britain’s significant technology manufacturing sector playing a pivotal role throughout the day, Prince William’s role as a global statesman was underscored as he engaged with business leaders from various corners of the world.

The day commenced for Prince William at the newly inaugurated facility of the international semiconductor company, KLA, headquartered in California. Visiting the research and development as well as the manufacturing division of KLA in Newport, South Wales, a city of significance to the semiconductor industry in Britain, Prince William toured the site, gaining insights into the manufacturing facilities and the intricate infrastructure pivotal for on-site research. Additionally, he interacted with members of KLA’s local supply chain, accentuating the company’s importance in the region. The Duke also exchanged words with apprentices and graduates among the 750-strong workforce of the company to delve into their training and experiences at KLA.
Subsequently, at the Wales Investment Summit, Prince William celebrated Wales’ broader industry and innovation landscape, showcasing the nation as a hub of excellence within the UK. The summit spotlighted priority sectors, regions, and clusters while reinforcing an enduring commitment to fostering growth, green employment opportunities, and decarbonisation. Addressing over 300 delegates representing companies involved in clean energy, technology, life sciences, financial services, manufacturing, and creative industries from nearly 30 countries, Prince William even delivered a few remarks in Welsh, commencing with the Welsh greeting “Prynhawn da” which translates to ‘good afternoon’.
Highlighting Wales’ position within the globally-connected business realm, it was noted that currently, there are approximately 1,480 overseas-owned companies operating in Wales, providing employment to over 174,000 individuals.
In his address, Prince William reminisced about his early days in Wales with his wife Catherine, remarking on the sense of warmth and kinship unique to the region with its three million inhabitants. He also paid tribute to his father, the King, recounting how over fifty years ago, he encouraged the co-founder of Sony to establish the company’s inaugural European facility in Wales, a decision that not only symbolised investment but also faith in the ingenuity and spirit of the Welsh populace. The Duke expressed pride in furthering his father’s legacy by endorsing Welsh business and innovation.
Before his speech, Prince William engaged with several Welsh business leaders and representatives from Wales’ green technology division, undertaking a brief tour of the summit’s exhibits and presentations. This reinforces the significance of Wales as a prominent player in the international business community.
In conclusion, Prince William’s engagements in Wales underscore his commitment to furthering innovation, growth, and sustainability, while also highlighting the integral role played by the royal family in supporting various sectors and initiatives across the UK.
