The lifeless body of a cave diver who went missing in the intricate tunnels of Tantanoola, Australia, has been found one day after his disappearance. The South Australia Police announced on Monday, December 1, that they had located the remains of the 65-year-old diver. Initial reports indicated that one man had drowned while another was rescued during a cave diving expedition in Tank Cave.
According to the South Australia Police release, the man’s body was recovered with the help of specialist divers from the Cave Divers Association of Australia. The tragic incident unfolded on Sunday, November 30, when emergency services were alerted to the drowning at Tank Cave near the Princes Highway.

The authorities confirmed the death of the 65-year-old diver, who hailed from Victoria. The police stated, “A recovery operation was initiated utilising specialist divers,” ruling out any suspicious circumstances surrounding the fatality. A detailed report for the Coroner is underway, shedding light on the events leading to the diver’s demise.
Superintendent Trent Cox addressed the media in a press conference, acknowledging the complexities of the cave system in Tantanoola. Describing it as a vast network of tunnels with varying degrees of accessibility, Cox empathised with the family’s ordeal, highlighting the challenging nature of the recovery process.
Despite the police withholding official confirmation of the diver’s identity, various sources have identified him as Gary Gibson in reports by The Daily Telegraph, 7News, and ABC. It was revealed that Gibson, a seasoned diver, faced difficulties fitting through a narrow passage during the expedition, failing to rendezvous at the pre-arranged meeting point with his companions.
Grant Pearce, the national director of the Cave Divers Association of Australia, paid tribute to Gibson’s diving expertise and vibrant personality, recalling his shocking disappearance and expressing condolences to Gibson’s family. Pearce recounted that Gibson had extensive experience navigating Tank Cave, making his tragic loss even more profound.
Participating in the recovery operation were ten divers from the association, including Dr Richard Harris, renowned for his involvement in the Thai cave rescue mission of 2018. Despite the perilous conditions of Tank Cave, efforts were made to bring closure to Gibson’s loved ones, culminating in the discovery of his body approximately 164 feet from his last known location.
The devastating incident serves as a poignant reminder of the inherent risks associated with cave diving and the importance of adhering to stringent safety measures. As the diving community mourns the loss of a skilled practitioner, tributes continue to pour in for Gary Gibson, honouring his contribution to the underwater exploration realm.
In the wake of this tragedy, authorities are calling for heightened vigilance and caution among divers venturing into challenging subterranean environments. The legacy of Gary Gibson lives on through his passion for exploration, leaving an indelible mark on the diving fraternity.
The recovery of the diver’s body represents a sombre conclusion to the search operation, prompting reflections on the fragility of human life amidst the unforgiving beauty of the underwater realm. May Gary Gibson’s memory endure as a testament to his unwavering spirit and dedication to the art of cave diving.
