Two children were reportedly injured in a recent coyote attack near a mall in San Diego. The incident occurred on Tuesday, Nov. 25, close to the UTC Mall in La Jolla at approximately 9:00 p.m. local time. According to reports from ABC 10News, Fox 5, and NBC San Diego, one of the victims was a 3-year-old girl who sustained bite wounds on her hip and arm. She was swiftly transported to Rady Children’s Hospital for medical attention.

The California Department of Fish and Wildlife confirmed that another child was also injured during the attack, however, details about their injuries and current condition have not been disclosed. When emergency responders arrived at the scene, the coyote responsible had already fled the area, as reported by Fox 5.
Efforts are underway to gather more information about the incident, with contact made to the San Diego Police Department, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, and the San Diego Humane Society for further details. While incidents of coyote attacks on humans are rare, the community is advised to remain cautious around wildlife and report any unusual animal behaviour.
Angela Hernandez-Cusick, Wildlife Rehabilitation Supervisor at San Diego Humane Society’s Wildlife Center in Ramona, shared insights on coyote behaviour, stating, “It’s actually very uncommon for coyotes to want to approach people. They’re naturally neophobic animals, so they have this natural fear of humans.” Hernandez-Cusick explained that as young coyotes begin to establish their territories, they may inadvertently enter urban areas in search of resources.
Considering the coyote’s potential reasons for the attack, Hernandez-Cusick suggested, “We can speculate that it could have been some sort of prey motivation that maybe was enacted if the child moved a certain way, or maybe the child approached an area that the coyote wasn’t expecting.” The incident serves as a reminder for communities to coexist with wildlife responsibly and to take precautions when encountering wild animals in urban areas.
Coyote attacks on humans are a rare occurrence in California, and authorities are working diligently to ensure the safety of residents, particularly in areas where wildlife may come into contact with urban environments. The incident near the UTC Mall in La Jolla highlights the importance of wildlife conservation and public awareness to prevent conflicts between humans and animals. Stay informed about local wildlife guidelines and report any wildlife sightings that may pose a risk to public safety. Remember, coexisting with nature requires mutual respect and understanding.
