Growing up, Wallace had dreams of becoming a professional athlete, with hockey being his favourite sport alongside football. However, his life took a drastic turn when he lost his right leg above the knee in a boating accident at the tender age of 10. The young athlete underwent a challenging year of hospital visits, rehabilitation, and adjusting to his first prosthetic leg.

It was at Camp No Limits, a program catering to children with disabilities, where Wallace’s path to sled hockey began. Introduced to the sport by a camp counselor, he found a new passion for the game. Joining a local team in Woodbridge, New Jersey, Wallace had a life-changing encounter with four-time Paralympic gold medalist Josh Pauls, who inspired him to pursue his dreams in a different direction.

Pauls’ display of his gold medal from the 2010 Winter Games to Wallace marked a pivotal moment in the young athlete’s life. It shifted his aspirations from playing in the NHL to competing in the Paralympics and aiming for gold. Wallace acknowledges the unwavering support of his family in helping him navigate through the challenges and setbacks he faced, both physically and emotionally.
Reflecting on his time in the hospital post-accident, Wallace appreciates how his family guided him in handling his emotions in a healthy way. They encouraged him to acknowledge and process his feelings while pushing him to progress and move forward. Now, as the Milan Cortina Paralympic Games draw closer, Wallace and his Team USA teammates are focused on achieving their fifth-straight Paralympic gold, embracing the pressure with a determined mindset.
Wallace’s story serves as a testament to the power of resilience and the unwavering support of loved ones in overcoming life’s hurdles. His journey from adversity to triumph is a source of inspiration for many, showcasing the strength of the human spirit in the face of challenges. As he gears up for the upcoming Paralympic Games, Wallace remains determined to give his all on the ice, embodying the true spirit of a champion.
