In a heartwarming tale of loyalty and heroism, a Golden Retriever named Polly has been credited with saving her owner’s life after he went into cardiac arrest. The incident took place in March 2024 when Polly’s owner, Adam Cooke, experienced a medical emergency while asleep at their home in Ireland. Polly’s quick thinking and actions not only alerted Adam’s wife, Hannah Cooke, to the situation but also played a crucial role in ensuring Adam received timely medical assistance.
The story of Polly’s heroism came to light during the British Heart Foundation’s annual Heart Hero Awards on Nov. 25, where Polly and Hannah were honoured as 2025 CPR Heroes. According to reports, Polly’s keen observation skills detected abnormal breathing patterns from Adam, prompting her to bark and alert Hannah to his distress. Thanks to Polly’s timely intervention, Hannah was able to recognise that Adam was in cardiac arrest and swiftly called emergency services for help.
Describing the events of that fateful night, Hannah recounted how a seemingly ordinary evening took a sudden turn when Polly’s barking woke her up to the realisation that Adam was in critical condition. Acting swiftly, she followed the instructions provided by the paramedic over the phone, including administering CPR until the ambulance arrived. Adam, described as a fit and healthy individual, later woke up in the hospital after six days and made a full recovery, underscoring the life-saving impact of Polly’s actions.
Reflecting on the incident, Adam acknowledged the pivotal role played by Polly and Hannah in his survival, acknowledging them as true heroes. The BHF, in recognition of their bravery and quick thinking, presented them with the prestigious CPR Heroes award at the ceremony in London.
