Miya Vidal, a 22-year-old mother from Cleveland, Ohio, recently shared her incredible journey of giving birth to one of the tiniest babies ever cared for at Cleveland Clinic Children’s Hospital. In September 2024, Miya discovered she was expecting her first child. When her daughter, Essence Pinkney, arrived prematurely in February the following year, she weighed only 12 oz – the same weight as a standard soda can. Speaking exclusively to PEOPLE, Miya expressed her shock at the survival of her petite newborn. The new parents endured a turbulent 153-day stay in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) before they could finally bring Essence home with them.
During Miya’s pregnancy, doctors diagnosed her baby with intrauterine growth restriction, marking her weight below the 10th percentile for her gestational age. Further complications arose from umbilical vein varix, limiting the flow of oxygen and blood through the umbilical cord. At 22 weeks into her pregnancy, Miya’s health deteriorated, resulting in elevated blood pressure and preeclampsia. An emergency cesarean section became imperative, leading to Essence’s premature birth and immediate transfer to intensive care. Under the round-the-clock care of medical staff, Essence faced various health challenges, including respiratory failure and a collapsed lung.

Dr. Mohsen Farghaly, the neonatologist overseeing Essence’s case, described her condition as extremely delicate due to her paper-thin skin and petite frame. Every milestone, no matter how small, was celebrated as a victory. Despite the challenges, Miya and her fiancé, Rufus Pinkney, found solace in reading to Essence, playing music, and praying together in the NICU. Their unwavering faith sustained them through the uncertainty and difficulties of Essence’s early days. In July, after months of perseverance and care, the family of three finally left the hospital, greeted by the cheers of doctors and nurses who had become their extended family.
Miya fondly recalls the rapid progress Essence has made since coming home, surpassing developmental milestones typical for a premature baby her age. Essence’s vibrant personality shines through, with Miya describing her as having a spirited temperament that keeps them on their toes. The proud mother marvels at Essence’s growth and vitality, grateful for the miracle that is their daughter. Despite the challenges, Miya and Rufus remain unwavering in their love and dedication to nurturing Essence as she thrives.

Looking ahead, Miya and Rufus have a special celebration planned for May 25, 2026, the original due date of their precious daughter. The couple will exchange vows on this symbolic day, marking a significant milestone in their journey as a family. Miya reflects on the profound impact Essence has had on their lives, bringing joy, resilience, and an enduring bond that transcends the trials they have faced. The resilience of Essence serves as a testament to the power of love, faith, and unwavering hope in the face of adversity.
In a world where miracles often feel out of reach, the story of Miya, Rufus, and Essence stands as a beacon of hope and inspiration. As they navigate the joys and challenges of parenthood, their unwavering love and belief in miracles continue to light the way forward. The journey of this Cleveland miracle family serves as a reminder that amidst life’s uncertainties, love, faith, and resilience can conquer all.
