D’Angelo’s Estate Establishes Pancreatic Cancer Foundation Following His Passing

D’Angelo, the late soul legend, tragically lost his life to pancreatic cancer at the age of 51 on October 14. In the wake of this devastating loss, D’Angelo’s estate has announced the launch of the D’Angelo Pancreatic Cancer Fund, a charitable initiative aimed at honouring his legacy and supporting those affected by this deadly form of cancer.
The foundation, established in partnership with the Black Boy Joy Foundation (BBJF), seeks to drive research advancements, raise awareness, and provide assistance to families impacted by pancreatic cancer. Through this initiative, D’Angelo’s family is dedicated to turning their grief into impactful action.
Imani Archer, D’Angelo’s daughter, along with his brother Luther Archer and BBJF founder Jean-Claude Kali, are leading the philanthropic efforts. They are committed to addressing the alarming statistics surrounding pancreatic cancer, especially its low survival rate of just 13%, with Black men being disproportionately affected.
Kali emphasised the urgent need to raise awareness and fund research to address the disparities in diagnosis and treatment faced by Black men. The foundation’s focus includes supporting high-impact research, early detection studies, programs for at-risk communities, advocacy, and awareness initiatives targeting Black men and boys.
Imani shared her heartfelt sentiments, expressing how the loss of her father to pancreatic cancer has shattered their world. Despite the darkness of this experience, she remains hopeful that by sharing D’Angelo’s story and advocating for research, they can prevent other families from enduring similar pain. She affirmed that her father’s light will continue to shine brightly through this meaningful work.
On October 14, D’Angelo, whose real name was Michael Eugene Archer, passed away in New York City after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. During his final days, he was under hospice care for two weeks following an extended hospitalisation. His family announced his peaceful transition, describing him as a shining star whose legacy of soul-stirring music will endure.
The family’s statement reflected both their sorrow at his departure and gratitude for the profound musical legacy he has left behind. They requested privacy during this difficult period but welcomed others to join them in mourning his loss while celebrating the gift of music he bestowed upon the world.
The launch of the D’Angelo Pancreatic Cancer Fund stands as a tribute to not only the musical genius of D’Angelo but also his enduring impact on culture and society.
