Jerry Stephenson, a remarkable 100-year-old man, celebrated his recent birthday with a profound sense of accomplishment as he reflected on his late-in-life passion for painting. In a heartwarming journey that began in his late 80s, Stephenson found solace, joy, and purpose through the strokes of his paintbrush, creating art that honours the memory of his late wife of 73 years.

Stephenson’s artistic journey unfolded when he moved into an assisted living community at the age of 85. Encouraged by a fellow resident, he delved into the world of painting, transforming his living space in the Santa Marta Retirement Community in Olathe, Kansas, into a vibrant art studio. Despite starting his artistic pursuit relatively late in life, Stephenson expressed contentment with the timing, stating that he cherishes the discoveries he continues to make about himself even at the age of 100.
“I had no idea I had such talent and ability. It goes to show we have unknown capability,” shared Stephenson in an interview with KSHB. His artwork predominantly features scenes from his adventurous life, including memories from past travels and experiences such as pheasant hunting and serving in World War II. He also draws inspiration from his late wife, capturing her favourite flower, irises, in many of his paintings. Stephenson affectionately mentioned that his beloved wife remains a constant presence in his art, saying, “She’s still with me in every brushstroke.”
Celebrating his centennial milestone in June surrounded by family, friends, and admirers of his art, Stephenson radiated a sense of fulfilment and purpose. Reflecting on his journey, he emphasised the importance of exploring hidden talents and embracing new experiences at any age. His profound words resonate with many, serving as a reminder that it is never too late to unlock hidden potential and find joy in unexpected pursuits.
Santa Marta Retirement Community commended Stephenson’s dedication to his art, highlighting how his passion serves as a poignant reminder of the joy and purpose that can be discovered in every stage of life. Through his artwork, Stephenson not only captures his own life experiences but also shares a piece of his heart and soul with those who admire his creations.
As Stephenson continues to paint and inspire others with his story, he remains a testament to the enduring power of creativity and determination. His late-in-life artistic journey is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and a testament to the boundless possibilities that await those who dare to explore new passions, regardless of age.
