Parents of Student Sue Fraternity After Tragic Suicide Following Alleged Hazing

Updike, took legal action against the Sigma Chi fraternity. Their son, Sawyer, tragically died by suicide in January 2024 at the tender age of 18. The lawsuit, filed on November 20, targets the fraternity’s Alpha Nu chapter, Sigma Chi International, and specific members for their alleged involvement in what the parents describe as “horrific hazing.”
According to legal documents obtained by PEOPLE, the lawsuit claims that a series of degrading hazing rituals combined with the coerced consumption of illegal drugs led to Sawyer’s psychological crisis and subsequent suicide.
