A 5-year-old boy was found near a McDonald’s restaurant after wandering away from his after-school program, leaving his parents concerned and upset. The incident, which took place at North Park Elementary School in Valencia, Calif., on Nov. 4, has sparked worry and frustration among the family.

According to the parents, Natalie and Brett Epstein, their son Oliver was attending an after-school program at the school when he somehow wandered off by himself. The parents received a frantic call from their nanny around 3:30 p.m., informing them that Oliver had been sighted near a McDonald’s on McBean Parkway, about a mile away from the school.

Upon receiving the call, Brett immediately contacted his wife Natalie, who then reached out to the after-school program staff to check on Oliver’s whereabouts. However, the parents claim that the staff mistakenly believed Oliver was still in their care, leading to a delay in realizing he was missing.

Oliver was eventually found by their nanny about three hours after he was dismissed from classes. Natalie expressed her distress over the situation, highlighting the dangers Oliver faced while crossing a busy section of traffic to reach the shopping plaza where he was found. She described the moment he was discovered as heartbreaking, mentioning that he was in tears.

The parents addressed the concerning incident at a Saugus Union School District governing board meeting, raising questions about the safety protocols in place at the after-school program. Brett highlighted the sheer luck that prevented a more tragic outcome, emphasising the need for vigilance in protecting children under their care.

In response to the incident, Saugus Union School District Superintendent Colleen Hawkins acknowledged the seriousness of the situation and confirmed that an investigation had been launched. She assured that corrective measures had been implemented to enhance student supervision protocols and facility security to prevent similar incidents in the future.

The Epstein family has since decided to withdraw Oliver from the after-school program, although he will continue his studies at North Park Elementary School. The parents’ advocacy for improved safety measures reflects their commitment not only to their son’s welfare but also to the well-being of other children in similar programs.
