A 25-year-old man, Barney Hewitt, was recently diagnosed with an incurable brain tumor after experiencing a severe seizure. The incident occurred on his 25th birthday when he suffered a violent seizure that resulted in a ruptured lung and both shoulders being broken. This life-altering event led to the discovery of the brain tumor, giving Barney a prognosis of five to eight years to live.

Barney had been experiencing symptoms such as frequent headaches and vision problems since he was 24 years old. Despite bringing these concerns to his general practitioner, he was repeatedly dismissed and told that he was fine. However, on July 12, 2019, everything changed when he had a massive seizure in the early hours of the morning. The severity of the seizure led to Barney being kept in a coma for three days as doctors worked to stabilise his condition.
Barney’s father, Bob Hewitt, who coincidentally shares the same birthday as his son, described the ordeal as one of the toughest moments of his life. The devastating news came shortly after the seizure when Barney was diagnosed with grade 3 astrocytoma, a fast-growing and aggressive brain tumor. Despite feeling relieved that his symptoms were finally taken seriously, Barney expressed frustration towards the doctors who had previously dismissed his concerns.
Following the diagnosis, Barney underwent brain surgery to remove the tumor. However, during the procedure, it was discovered that the tumor was located in a sensitive area of the brain, making complete removal impossible. As a result, Barney was given a bleak prognosis and told he had only five to eight years left to live. Bob described the day he received this news as the worst day of his life, filled with shock and a feeling of the world falling apart.
Despite the grim prognosis, Barney has undergone radiation and chemotherapy treatments in an effort to extend his life. His father, Bob, has taken on the challenge of participating in the “99 Miles in November” fundraiser organised by Brain Tumour Research. The fundraiser aims to raise awareness and funds for brain tumor research by completing 3.3 miles a day through various activities such as walking, running, cycling, or swimming. Bob has already raised significant funds in honour of his son’s battle.
In a bid to prevent others from experiencing the same challenges faced by his family, Bob emphasised the importance of finding better treatments that can prolong the lives of those battling brain cancer. By participating in the fundraising challenge, he hopes to contribute to the ongoing research efforts and support other families affected by this disease.
