A recent grizzly bear attack in Canada has left three students and a teacher injured, with authorities providing new details about the incident. The attack took place as a school group was having lunch on a trail near Highway 20 in Bella Coola on British Columbia’s Central Coast on Nov. 20.
According to the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, emergency services received a call about an “animal attack” at 1:46 p.m. local time. The victims, comprising students and teachers, were ambushed by a grizzly bear that emerged from the forest, prompting multiple teachers to intervene using bear spray and a bear banger to fend off the animal.
Inspector Kevin Van Damme confirmed that three children and one adult sustained injuries during the attack, with two victims in critical condition and the other two seriously hurt. While the identities and ages of the victims have not been disclosed, efforts to locate the bear responsible for the attack are ongoing.
Following the incident, the injured individuals were initially treated at Bella Coola Hospital before being transported to Vancouver for further medical attention. Inspector Van Damme expressed well wishes for the victims and their families, hoping for a speedy recovery for those affected by the attack.
Acwsalcta School, operated by the Nuxalk Nation in Bella Coola, acknowledged the strength and compassion demonstrated by students, staff, emergency responders, and the community during the unexpected event. While the bear involved in the attack remains at large, preliminary information suggests that it may have sustained prior injuries. Authorities have advised the public to avoid the 4 Mile area and remain indoors until further notice, encouraging anyone with bear sightings in Bella Coola to report them.
The Nuxalk Acwsalcmalslayc Academy of Learning Board of Directors reiterated their commitment to supporting the injured students and staff members, offering emotional support and resources as needed in the aftermath of the traumatic incident.
