Popular influencer Chiara Ferragni is at the center of a legal storm, facing the possibility of a five-year prison sentence as she heads to court next week for a fraud trial. The 38-year-old Italian fashion blogger has come under intense scrutiny for her involvement in a 2022 charitable collaboration to sell branded Pandoro Christmas cakes.

Chiara Ferragni gained fame as a fashion blogger in 2009 before making history by appearing on the cover of Vogue in 2015. However, her reputation has been tarnished by allegations of aggravated fraud related to the Pandoro Christmas cake venture. The Italian Competition Authority (AGCM) sanctioned Ferragni in 2023 for misleading the public about the charitable nature of the collaboration with food company Balocco.
The collaboration prominently featured messages claiming that proceeds from the cake sales would support the Regina Margherita hospital in Turin. However, it was later revealed that only one €50,000 donation was made to the hospital by Balocco, sparking allegations of misleading advertising against Ferragni.
In response to the fraud claims, Ferragni initially defended herself in a video on Instagram, attributing the controversy to a “communication error.” She pledged to donate the €1 million fee she received from Balocco to the hospital in an attempt to rectify the situation.
Despite her efforts to address the allegations, Ferragni found herself embroiled in further legal troubles. By the end of 2024, she had reportedly paid a total of €3.4 million to settle various investigations, including fines from the AGCM and contributions to charitable causes. Her company also announced a commitment to avoid conducting business operations linked to charitable activities in the future.
Following a period of relative silence on social media in 2024, Ferragni returned to the spotlight over the past year, engaging in collaborations with luxury brands and gracing the covers of beauty magazines. However, looming over her professional endeavours is the impending trial on fraud charges, scheduled to begin on Tuesday, Nov. 25.
If convicted, Ferragni could face a prison sentence ranging from one to five years, according to Reuters. Her legal team has expressed confidence in successfully refuting the criminal allegations, maintaining that any contentious issues have already been addressed and resolved prior to the AGCM’s involvement.
As the influencer world watches closely, Chiara Ferragni’s impending trial stands as a cautionary tale about the complexities of blending commercial ventures with charitable initiatives. The outcome of her legal battle could have far-reaching implications not only for Ferragni herself but also for the influencer industry as a whole.
