13 People Hospitalized After Ammonia Leak at Rhode Island Food Facility

Thirteen individuals have been hospitalized, with two in critical condition, following an ammonia leak at a food processing facility in Rhode Island. The incident took place at Taylor Farms in North Kingstown on Thursday, Nov. 20. Emergency responders were alerted to the leak, prompting a swift response to the scene.

According to reports from local media outlets WJAR and NBC Boston and WHDH, people emerged from the building reporting a strong smell of ammonia and experiencing irritation to their eyes and throats. North Kingstown Fire Chief John Linacre confirmed that there was no liquid ammonia leak, only vapor, and that the facility’s ammonia system had been shut down. Linacre further mentioned that two of the hospitalized individuals are in serious condition, while the others are expected to recover.
Hazmat teams from the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management were quick to arrive at the scene to ventilate the facility. DEXON teams were also on-site to decontaminate workers. The leak, believed to have originated from a valve on the roof, allowed air to enter and draw the ammonia into the facility, causing discomfort and health issues for those present.
The Department of Environmental Management is currently investigating the incident, while reports have surfaced regarding Taylor Farms’ history with such incidents. In 2020, a similar leak resulted in 13 hospitalizations, leading to a significant fine for the company. In a settlement agreement with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Taylor Farms agreed to pay penalties and implement safety improvements at the Rhode Island facility.
This recent incident follows another ammonia leak at a different location, where nearly 40 individuals were hospitalized in Oklahoma.
