Reports indicate that a tragic incident at a hostel in Bali has resulted in the death of a 25-year-old tourist and left several others hospitalized. The incident, suspected to be a case of poisoning, occurred at the Clandestino Hostel in the coastal village of Canggu. Deqing Zhuoga, a tourist from China, had been staying at the hostel when she fell violently ill after consuming a communal dinner, experiencing severe vomiting and chills.

According to authorities, Zhuoga passed away in the early hours of September 2. Her body was discovered when staff noticed she had not checked out. Prior to her death, hostel staff had attempted to seek medical help for Zhuoga by taking her to a nearby clinic after she fell ill. Unfortunately, despite receiving initial treatment, she could not be saved due to the lack of necessary funds for further medical intervention.

The cause of Zhuoga’s death has been identified as acute gastroenteritis and hypovolaemic shock. Acute gastroenteritis is a condition characterized by inflammation in the stomach and intestines, leading to symptoms such as pain, vomiting, and diarrhoea. On the other hand, hypovolaemic shock is a serious medical emergency that results from a significant loss of blood or fluids, causing organ dysfunction and potentially proving fatal.
Zhuoga’s friend, Leila Li, who shared a room with her at the hostel, was also affected and had to spend five days in intensive care. Reports indicate that more than 20 people suffered from collective poisoning, with ten individuals being in critical condition and one fatality. The exact cause of the poisoning is still under investigation, with suspicions of pesticide and food poisoning being raised.
Following the incident, concerns have been raised about the cleanliness and safety standards at the Clandestino Hostel. Former guests have criticised the hostel for alleged bedbug infestations, adding to the troubling situation. The room where Zhuoga tragically passed away has been quarantined as authorities continue their investigations into the incident.
The tragedy has prompted authorities to look into the hostel’s practices and standards to prevent similar mishaps in the future. Meanwhile, the victim’s family has been grappling with the devastating loss and the prolonged process of handling the aftermath of the incident. Efforts are underway to provide support to those affected and to ensure that proper measures are taken to address any lapses in safety and hygiene protocols at the hostel.
As the investigation into the incident progresses, concerns regarding the overall safety and well-being of travellers in such accommodations have come to the forefront. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of stringent health and safety measures in the hospitality industry, particularly in establishments catering to budget-conscious backpackers.
Authorities and concerned parties are working together to shed light on the circumstances surrounding the tragic event and to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future. The impact of this incident has reverberated through the community and serves as a reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of prioritising safety and well-being in all facets of travel and accommodation.
