Woman Gives Birth on Side of Road After Allegedly Being Discharged in Labor: Family Outcry

Mercedes Wells, a young mother, found herself in a harrowing situation as she gave birth on the side of a road in Indiana after being discharged from Franciscan Health Crown Point Hospital while in active labor. Her family alleged that she was wrongfully discharged from the hospital and mistreated because of her race.
According to reports from ABC affiliate WLS, Mercedes was discharged from the hospital on Sunday, Nov. 16, after being advised by hospital staff to return home and await further progression of her labor. She and her husband, Leon, had attempted to contact the hospital the previous day but claimed their concerns were not addressed until she was ultimately sent home the following day as per Fox affiliate WFLD.
Following her discharge, Mercedes went into labor on the side of the road while en route to another hospital. Videos capturing the distressing moments have since circulated online, shedding light on the incident that has sparked outrage.
The baby, named Alena Ariel Wells, was born weighing 6 lbs. and measuring 18.5 inches. Her uncle, Lance D. Thompson Jr., took to Facebook to share the news of her birth and to express the family’s grievances towards Franciscan Health Crown Point Hospital for what they deem as unjust treatment of Mercedes.
In a Facebook post shared by Cherise Thompson, Mercedes’ sister-in-law, it was revealed that Mercedes pleaded with the nursing staff to allow her to stay at the hospital as her contractions were intensifying. Despite her distress and the close proximity of her contractions, she claims she was turned away without compassion.
Upon reaching Munster Community Hospital post-roadside birth, Mercedes received the necessary care and attention. The Wells family has sought legal representation, alleging discrimination based on their race with a desire to prevent similar incidents affecting others in the future.
Franciscan Health Crown Point President and CEO, Raymond Grady, released a statement acknowledging the distressing nature of the incident and reassured the public that an investigation is underway. While ensuring that both mother and child are reported to be in good health, he emphasised the hospital’s commitment to upholding values of respect and compassion.
The CEO also highlighted the hospital’s stance on healthcare disparities, aiming to address and rectify any shortcomings in their practices. Moving forward, Franciscan Health Crown Point intends to implement necessary changes to prevent such occurrences and uphold their mission of providing quality healthcare to all individuals, regardless of background.
