Animal Sanctuary Saves 2-Lb. Owl Covered in Hardened Cement in ‘Brand-New Situation’ for the Rescue

A Great-Horned Owl’s Remarkable Rescue from a Cement Mixer

A dramatic rescue unfolded at the Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in Kanab, Utah, when a great-horned owl was discovered covered in hardened concrete. The juvenile owl, weighing only two pounds, had fallen into a cement mixer, leading to a challenging situation for the rescuers. The owl was brought to the Wild Friends rehabilitation center at the sanctuary after locals spotted the distressed bird.

The extent of the issue became clear during the initial examination when approximately a quarter of the owl’s body was found encased in dried concrete. Bart Richwalski, the Wild Friends supervisor, noted that in their 40-year history, the staff had never encountered a case like this. Collaborating with other wildlife rehabilitators, they devised a plan to help the owl with the least invasive methods possible.

Over a span of six days, the rescue team administered daily warm water baths under anesthesia to soften and remove the concrete from the owl’s face, chest, and right wing. The bird responded positively to the treatment, showing signs of improvement. Judah Battista, the chief sanctuary officer, praised the Wild Friends team for their dedicated efforts in assisting the owl through this unprecedented situation.

The owl, believed to be a young male born in 2025, is now on the path to recovery, having overcome the most challenging phase of treatment. Despite still having a long journey ahead, the owl’s progress is evident as it was observed successfully flying to a six-foot perch in its outdoor enclosure. The sanctuary plans to release the owl back into the wild after its next molt in spring or summer of 2026.
