Raffi’s battle began when he was diagnosed with Group 3 large cell anaplastic medulloblastoma, a type of malignant brain tumor commonly found in children. This diagnosis came as a shock to the family, prompting them to seek treatment at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children in London. Raffi underwent a 10-hour surgery to remove a 5 cm tumor from his brain and subsequently received months of chemotherapy to combat the cancer.

During this challenging time, Nicky Starkowitz, who works as a pediatric nurse, was also dealt a devastating blow when she was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer. The family rallied together to support both Raffi and Nicky through their respective treatments at Royal Free Hospital in London, where Nicky underwent a mastectomy and ongoing chemotherapy sessions.

As the cost of medical treatment escalated, the Starkowitz family turned to crowdfunding, setting up a GoFundMe page to raise funds for Raffi’s participation in a new drug trial in the U.S. The trial will involve treatment with difluoromethylornithine (DFMO), a drug approved by the FDA for high-risk neuroblastoma in children, offering hope for a more targeted and effective approach to Raffi’s condition.
