The young girl, known as Mimi, was reportedly kept without food for two weeks and frequently restrained with zip ties before her death. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner determined that Mimi’s cause of death was fatal child abuse due to starvation, ruling it as a homicide. Shockingly, Mimi weighed only 26 to 27 pounds at the time of her death and had never been reported missing to the police.

In October 2025, the New Britain Police received a tip about suspicious activity at an abandoned property. Upon investigation, they discovered a large container in the backyard containing what appeared to be human remains. Subsequently, the body was identified as that of Torres-Garcia, leading to a grim revelation that she likely passed away in 2024 when her family resided in Farmington. Her family then allegedly transported her remains when they relocated in March 2025.
Upon opening the 40-gallon bin, authorities found Mimi’s body wrapped in a plastic bag, covered with a comforter and sheets, inside a laundry basket. The distressing details of the case prompted swift action from law enforcement, resulting in arrests linked to the child’s tragic demise. Mimi’s mother, Karla Garcia, faced multiple charges, including murder with special circumstances, conspiracy to commit murder, and intentional cruelty to a child under 19.
Additionally, Karla’s sister, Jackelyn Garcia, and her ex-boyfriend, Jonatan “JoJo” Nanita, were also arrested in connection with the case. While Karla pleaded not guilty and is being held on a $5 million bond, Jackelyn faced charges of cruelty to a child and unlawful restraint. Meanwhile, Nanita was accused of killing the child alongside Karla, leading to charges of tampering with evidence and disposal of a body.
During court hearings, shocking details emerged, with Nanita’s current girlfriend revealing his alleged involvement in transporting the container holding Mimi’s remains to the abandoned property. His actions indicated a callous disregard for the child’s body, sparking outrage and condemnation from the community. The trio is set to return to court for further proceedings, with their legal representatives yet to provide statements regarding the allegations.
The harrowing case of Jacqueline “Mimi” Torres-Garcia highlights the importance of vigilance and intervention in cases of child abuse and neglect. The tragic circumstances surrounding her death serve as a stark reminder of the vulnerability of children and the responsibility society holds in protecting their well-being. As investigations continue and justice is sought for Mimi, the community mourns the loss of a young life marred by unimaginable cruelty.
