Akon Seeks Joint Custody of 17-Year-Old Daughter in Divorce Proceedings

Akon, the renowned singer, has made a legal move regarding his ongoing divorce from his estranged wife, Tomeka Thiam. The artist has officially requested joint legal and physical custody of their 17-year-old daughter, Journey. This decision comes in response to Tomeka Thiam’s initial divorce filing that occurred back in September, just days before what would have marked the 29th anniversary of the couple’s marriage.
In court documents obtained by PEOPLE, it was revealed that Akon, whose birth name is Aliaune Badara Thiam, has put forth his plea for joint custody of their teenage daughter. Additionally, he has made a request to the court that no spousal support be awarded to his estranged wife.
Tomeka had previously sought sole legal custody of their daughter and had requested physical custody for herself with visitation rights granted to Akon. She had also requested spousal support while also urging the court not to award any spousal support to the singer known for hits like “Smack That.”
The couple tied the knot in 1996, and Tomeka initiated divorce proceedings in September, shortly before what would have been their 29th wedding anniversary. Akon has been open in the past about his beliefs in polygamy, sharing in a 2022 interview his fatherhood of nine children. Musician Amirror claimed in 2023 to be one of Akon’s four wives, citing cultural norms as a justification for the lifestyle choice.
