Chaz McNelis, a 20-year-old college baseball player at the University of Arizona, faced an unexpected challenge during his sophomore year when he became a father. Despite the added responsibilities of fatherhood, school, and sports, McNelis has found a way to make it work with the support of his teammates, coaches, and family.
Originally from Las Vegas, McNelis discovered he was going to be a parent while attending the College of Southern Nevada. His now-11-month-old son, lovingly referred to as “Baby G,” primarily resides with his mother in Las Vegas, where McNelis’s family also provides assistance in caring for the child. Despite the distance, McNelis ensures he spends quality time with Baby G every other week or weekend when he visits.

McNelis prioritizes parenting by incorporating Baby G into his daily routine, including bringing him along to baseball practices and meals with the team. His teammates have embraced Baby G, eagerly stepping in to help care for him by playing, feeding, and interacting with him. While juggling fatherhood, schoolwork, and athletics can be demanding, McNelis finds solace in the joy and love his son brings him, which helps him reset after a long day.
Although the journey of parenthood comes with challenges, such as sleepless nights and the difficulty of saying goodbye when Baby G leaves, McNelis remains grateful for the support he receives from his family and teammates. He credits the understanding co-parenting arrangement with Baby G’s mother for alleviating some of the stress, allowing him to focus on his responsibilities as a student-athlete.

Despite the hurdles, McNelis acknowledges the invaluable role his son plays in his life, describing the moments spent with Baby G as a source of happiness and fulfillment. His teammates’ unwavering support and love for Baby G have created a welcoming environment for the young child, enabling McNelis to navigate the complexities of being a father and a college athlete.
By balancing online classes, baseball training, and fatherhood, McNelis has successfully integrated parenting into his college experience. His TikTok videos featuring Baby G have resonated with thousands of viewers, showcasing the heartwarming bond between a father, his son, and a team that embraces them both wholeheartedly.
As McNelis continues to pursue his academic and athletic goals, he remains committed to nurturing his relationship with Baby G, ensuring that the young child thrives in a community filled with love and support. With a shared passion for baseball and a strong support system behind him, McNelis embodies resilience, dedication, and the profound bond between a father and his child.
