A wheelchair user, Gloryanna Samuel, has taken legal action against American Airlines and its regional partner, Envoy Air, following an incident where she was reportedly left stranded at Miami International Airport. The lawsuit, filed on Nov. 7, claims that Samuel, who suffers from various medical conditions including diabetes and high blood pressure, was abandoned at the gate when she required wheelchair assistance for her connecting flight in April 2025.
The complaint states that despite Samuel’s request for wheelchair assistance being included in her ticket reservation, she was allegedly left unattended in her wheelchair at the gate by Envoy Air, causing her to miss her flight. She was then rebooked on a flight for the following morning without being offered a hotel room, forcing her to spend the night at the airport in uncomfortable conditions.

Due to the lack of proper assistance and having to sleep on a chair at the airport, Samuel experienced physical discomfort including swelling in her feet and eyes, pain in her left arm, and elevated blood pressure, exacerbating her existing medical issues. The lawsuit seeks damages for the alleged negligence, physical pain, emotional distress, mental anguish, and accrued medical expenses as a result of the incident.
Samuel’s attorney, Marina Leonard of Colianni & Leonard LLC, condemned the treatment of her client by American Airlines, highlighting the lack of respect and concern for customers. Leonard emphasized that such incidents should never occur and expressed determination to seek justice for Samuel. American Airlines declined to comment on the matter, and inquiries to Miami International Airport did not receive an immediate response.
American Airlines provides wheelchair assistance for passengers at airports for tasks such as traveling to and from gates, navigating between connecting flights, and transport to baggage claim areas. While it is advisable to request assistance in advance, passengers can also communicate their wheelchair needs to airport staff on the day of travel.

This legal action underscores the importance of ensuring that airlines provide adequate assistance and support for passengers with disabilities to prevent distressing experiences like the one Samuel faced. It serves as a reminder of the responsibility that airlines have in ensuring the well-being and comfort of all passengers, particularly those with specific medical requirements.
The case also sheds light on the challenges faced by individuals with disabilities when traveling and the need for improved accessibility and support within the aviation industry. It highlights the importance of upholding the rights of passengers with disabilities and ensuring that their travel experiences are safe, comfortable, and dignified.
As the legal proceedings unfold, it remains to be seen how American Airlines and Envoy Air will respond to the allegations of negligence and the impact it had on Samuel. This case serves as a poignant reminder of the ongoing efforts needed to create a more inclusive and accommodating environment for all travellers, regardless of their physical abilities.
