A trio of hikers exploring the scenic trails of Big Bend National Park in Texas recently had a heart-stopping encounter with a mountain lion. Joey Thometz, one of the hikers, recounted the tense moment when they spotted the wild animal following them on the Boot Canyon Trail.

As they made their way along the trail, the hikers were startled when a large tan body with a long tail and black tip darted across their path and disappeared into the hills. Thometz described the surreal experience to the Houston Chronicle, saying, “All I could see at first was a large tan body, long tail, black tip. It disappeared in the hills for a few moments.”

After the initial shock wore off, the group realised that the creature they had encountered was indeed a mountain lion, which was now observing them from a distance. Thometz managed to capture a brief video of the majestic animal perched on a hill, watching them intently.
According to the National Park Service, Big Bend National Park sees approximately 150 mountain lion sightings each year, making encounters with these majestic creatures a relatively common occurrence. Despite the familiarity with the sightings, the hikers were clearly taken aback by the close encounter.
Appreciating the potential danger of the situation, the hikers took immediate precautions to prevent a dangerous interaction with the mountain lion. Remembering the trail warnings about the rare risk of encountering a mountain lion, Thometz and his companions refrained from running, as it could trigger the predator instincts of the animal.
Instead of fleeing, the hikers made loud noises to intimidate the mountain lion and deter it from approaching them. As the big cat started to move away, the group decided to continue their hike in the opposite direction, ensuring a safe distance from the wild animal.
The encounter lasted less than a minute, but the group wasted no time in alerting park officials to the sighting. By reporting the incident promptly, they helped ensure the safety of fellow hikers and visitors to the park.
While mountain lion sightings along Big Bend’s roads are more common, encounters on trails do occur, sometimes leading to aggressive behaviour from the animals. The National Park Service advises hikers to maintain eye contact with the mountain lion, stand tall to appear larger, and slowly back away in case of an encounter.
In situations where a mountain lion does attack, hikers are encouraged to fight back by throwing rocks or sticks and raising their voices to scare off the animal. By following these safety guidelines, hikers can better protect themselves and prevent harmful interactions with wildlife.
The hikers’ harrowing experience serves as a reminder of the importance of awareness and preparedness when venturing into the wilderness. While encounters with mountain lions are rare, being informed and alert can make all the difference in ensuring a safe and enjoyable outdoor adventure.
In conclusion, the group’s close call with the mountain lion in Big Bend National Park highlights both the beauty and the potential risks of exploring nature. By staying calm, acting decisively, and following safety guidelines, hikers can navigate encounters with wildlife and appreciate the wonders of the natural world without endangering themselves or the animals.
