Three siblings were left stranded at the top of a 328-foot drop tower ride at a theme park in Brazil after it briefly stopped working. The incident, which occurred on Sunday, Nov. 9, involved Beatriz Cristine de Souza, 27, and her two brothers aged 29 and 8, according to Brazilian outlet G1. As other carriages dropped to the ground, theirs remained at the top, as seen in the video shared by Viral Press via the Associated Press. Despite appearing calm in the video, the siblings were unsure how long they would be stuck up there.
Beatriz expressed her anxiety, saying, “I was desperate because I did not know if the ride would plummet, start working again, or how much longer we would be up there.” The siblings remained suspended for around 20 minutes before the theme park resolved the malfunction, attributing it to the ride’s automation and control system requiring a check due to external factors.
According to a statement from Beto Carrero World, the attraction’s advanced automation and control system continuously monitors parameters like wind speed and direction. This system identified the need for a check and paused operations as a precaution. The technical team promptly evaluated the situation, and the ride resumed normal operation shortly after.
After a nerve-wracking 15 minutes of being suspended, the ride’s sound system reassured the family, “Rest assured, the fun continues, and the technical teams are on their way.” Subsequently, the carriage began descending slowly, leading to a safe end to the ordeal. Fortunately, nobody was injured, and Beatriz emphasised that they still enjoyed their visit to the park despite the scare.
The Beto Carrero World website describes the Big Drop as one of the biggest radical towers globally, reaching the height equivalent of a building with more than 30 floors. The thrilling ride sees the elevator reaching speeds of up to 120km/h (around 75 mph) during the freefall, making it a daring challenge for adrenaline enthusiasts.
In response to queries, Beto Carrero World did not provide an immediate comment when contacted. The episode, though unsettling, did not overshadow the family’s positive experiences at the theme park. Beatriz emphasised their love for the park, stating that they always have incredible moments there.
