An Indiana man, Jacob Vera, pleaded guilty to neglect of a dependent resulting in serious bodily injury on Thursday, Nov. 6, linked to the death of his 3-month-old daughter. Vera is set to be sentenced on Dec. 1. The heartbreaking incident unfolded on March 25, 2023, when Muncie Police Department officers responded to a call at the Bestway Inn in Muncie around 8:30 p.m. Jessica Brown, the girl’s mother, returned home from work to a devastating scene.

At the residence, she found one child in a mobile crib crying while her other child, 3-month-old Isabella, was swaddled in a blanket and gently rocking in a baby swing, under the care of Vera. Brown discovered that Isabella was not breathing, prompting her to seek help immediately, only to find that Vera had left with their only phone. Tragically, medical personnel confirmed that Isabella had passed away approximately two hours before they arrived, with signs of rigor mortis present, indicating asphyxiation as the cause of death.

Witnesses later revealed that Vera had sought a ride to Illinois, with one guest recounting that Vera asked for a lift to Chicago. Another individual disclosed that Vera solicited a ride to Illinois around 5:45 p.m., and she agreed to transport him in exchange for gas money. Vera’s chilling reason for leaving the children unattended was to travel to Illinois and avoid any confrontation with Jessica Brown, as told to investigators during questioning on March 28.
