A couple’s dream wedding faced unexpected challenges when a Trunk-or-Treat event disrupted their plans at the same venue. Duvi and Ryan Kominiarek, who got engaged in May 2024, meticulously planned their wedding at a local venue in Buffalo, N.Y., on Oct. 18, 2025. Taking a hands-on approach, the couple handled everything from invitations to crafting their own bouquets and boutonnieres. However, their special day turned into a whirlwind of unexpected obstacles.

Duvi shared with PEOPLE exclusively, “I thought planning my own wedding would be a no-brainer, but looking back, I completely understand why people hire wedding planners.” The challenges began with the discovery that their hotel for on-site photos now required a fee due to a change in ownership. Additionally, the bar they booked for the afterparty accidentally scheduled a Halloween karaoke night for the same evening, adding to the couple’s stress. Despite these hurdles, they remained determined to make their day memorable.
As the wedding day unfolded, more unforeseen mishaps ensued. The photographers arrived late due to traffic, Duvi’s mother got temporarily locked in a hotel bathroom, and a bridesmaid had a broken dress strap. The ultimate chaos came when a Trunk-or-Treat event flooded the venue’s parking lot, causing a ripple effect on the wedding schedule. Families, children in costumes, and decorated cars filled the parking area, hindering guests’ arrival and creating a festive but chaotic atmosphere.

Despite the challenges, Duvi and Ryan maintained a positive attitude. Even as they walked down the aisle to the sounds of engines revving and firetrucks honking, they embraced the unexpected turn of events with humour and grace. Duvi reflected, “My life could be a sitcom, and honestly, she’s right. So, when things started going off the rails on my wedding day, it just felt like another episode in the series that is my life. At that point, all we could do was laugh and roll with it.”
Sharing her experience on TikTok, Duvi chose not to name the venue, acknowledging that the staff had been supportive despite the unforeseen circumstances. The couple received refunds and additional services from their photographers and the venue coordinator, who made amends for the inconvenience caused. In the end, Duvi and Ryan danced the night away at their reception and Halloween-themed karaoke afterparty, creating lasting memories.
The couple’s resilience and ability to adapt to unexpected challenges highlight the importance of embracing the moment and focusing on what truly matters – celebrating their love and union. Duvi’s advice to others facing unforeseen obstacles on their special day is to roll with the punches and make the best of every situation. As they reflected on their eventful wedding day, Duvi emphasized, “You can plan everything perfectly, and something unexpected can still happen, but it’s how you roll with it and make the best of it that counts. After all, we were marrying our best friend, and that’s what really matters.”
