At least four people have lost their lives and 11 others have suffered injuries following a tragic incident where a car drove into a group of pedestrians in Florida. The devastating event took place in the early hours of Saturday, November 8, when the vehicle crashed into a business located in Ybor, a neighbourhood in Tampa. The TPD highlighted that the incident unfolded around 12:40 a.m. when the TPD Air Service observed a vehicle driving recklessly on I-275. The driver of the car continued to exhibit dangerous driving behaviour at a high speed and eventually exited the interstate at Doyle Carlton Drive, before losing control of the vehicle. Subsequently, the car collided with a storefront, striking multiple pedestrians in its path. Prior to the crash, the same vehicle had been spotted engaging in street racing activities in a nearby area, according to the police.
The tragic event resulted in a total of 15 individuals being impacted. Regrettably, three of the victims succumbed to their injuries at the scene, while a fourth victim passed away at the hospital, as confirmed by the authorities. Presently, one of the injured victims is in critical condition, with eight others in stable condition at hospitals. Additionally, two more victims sustained minor injuries related to the incident, the TPD informed.
The suspected driver, a 22-year-old individual, was apprehended at the scene following the crash. The Florida Highway Patrol has assumed responsibility for leading the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the collision, as stated by the TPD. Chief Lee Bercaw of the TPD described the incident as a “senseless tragedy” and expressed condolences to the families of the victims and all those affected by the devastating event.
