In a harrowing case that has baffled investigators for two decades, the body of a backpacker was discovered naked under palm fronds in Australia, and to this day, her killer remains unidentified. The tragic victim was Simone Strobel, a 25-year-old German backpacker who was found deceased near a campsite in New South Wales. Despite the passage of time, authorities have been unable to determine who was responsible for her untimely demise.

Simone Strobel went missing six days after a night out with friends in Lismore, New South Wales. Tobias Moran (formerly Tobias Suckfuell) was initially charged with her murder in 2022, but the charges were later dropped, and he maintains his innocence. The case has been complex, with two DNA samples recovered from the scene—a hair and male DNA on her clothing—still undergoing analysis. A reward of A$1 million remains on offer for any information leading to a breakthrough in the investigation.
After a lengthy process spanning 20 years, the coroner has officially concluded that Simone Strobel was the victim of a homicide. State coroner Teresa O’Sullivan declared that Strobel “died as a result of homicide by a person or persons unknown” and has urged for further testing of the DNA evidence found at the crime scene. Despite the ruling, the precise circumstances of Strobel’s death and the identity of the perpetrator remain shrouded in mystery.
Strobel, a kindergarten teacher from Bavaria, had been travelling along the Australian east coast with her then-boyfriend Tobias Moran, Moran’s sister, and a friend. On the fateful night of her disappearance, the group had been socialising at a local hotel before returning to their campsite. Witnesses recall an argument taking place, resulting in Strobel leaving the site distressed. She was last seen crossing a roundabout in the vicinity, with several people reporting hearing screams shortly after.
Moran raised the alarm the following day when Strobel failed to return, sparking a search that culminated in the grisly discovery of her body concealed beneath palm fronds at a nearby sports ground. The coroner’s ruling has brought some closure to the case, yet key questions regarding the motive and events leading to Strobel’s murder remain unanswered.
Although Tobias Moran was briefly charged with Strobel’s murder, the legal proceedings were inconclusive, and he was eventually reimbursed for his legal expenses after maintaining his innocence. The coroner has recommended that the case be reviewed by the NSW Police’s Unsolved Homicide Team, emphasising the importance of re-examining the DNA evidence using advanced techniques. Additionally, the A$1 million reward stands as a beacon of hope for potential witnesses to come forward.
As the investigation into Simone Strobel’s tragic death continues, her family in Germany continues to grapple with the profound impact of her loss. The coroner acknowledged the family’s enduring suffering and expressed hope that someday the truth behind Strobel’s murder will come to light. The unresolved nature of this case serves as a stark reminder of the persistence required in seeking justice for victims of violent crimes, even when years have passed without resolution.
