Passengers on Carnival Cruise Lines have filed a complaint alleging they woke up with bed bug bites during a recent voyage. The incident was said to have taken place on the Carnival Horizon cruise ship in February, leading to a lawsuit against the company.

The lawsuit, filed in the Southern District of Florida, involves passengers Catherine Shockley and William Maycock. They claim to have discovered over 30 individual bed bug bites on their bodies after spending a night in their cabin. Initially mistaking the bites for insect marks, they later found live bed bugs, fecal spotting, and eggs in their room.
The guests reported the issue to the ship’s staff, citing painful welts, loss of sleep, and mental distress as a result of the ordeal. Carnival Cruise Lines, in response, highlighted their rigorous sanitation procedures and bed bug detection protocols onboard their ships.
According to Carnival’s website, all cabin attendants undergo training to identify and address potential bed bug infestations regularly. Despite these measures, the plaintiffs alleged that no action was taken by the crew to address the situation in their cabin.
The lawsuit accuses Carnival Cruise Lines of negligence on three counts, alleging that the incident could have been prevented with proper inspection and maintenance practices. While bed bugs are not known to transmit diseases, their bites can result in itching and discomfort.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) run the Vessel Sanitation Program to ensure cruise ships maintain high standards of health and safety. Carnival Horizon, where the incident occurred, scored well in their last inspection, indicating a commitment to passenger well-being.
In response to the lawsuit, Carnival Cruise Lines refrained from commenting on ongoing litigation but reiterated their commitment to maintaining clean and safe environments for their guests. Bed bug incidents, though rare, can pose challenges for the hospitality industry worldwide.
Bed bug infestations are a common issue faced by hotels and cruise ships globally, underscoring the importance of proactive pest control measures. Guests are advised to report any signs of infestations promptly to prevent further spread and potential discomfort during their stay.
As the legal proceedings continue, the case serves as a reminder for companies in the travel and hospitality sector to prioritise proactive measures against pest infestations. Ensuring a comfortable and safe environment for guests remains paramount in the face of such challenges.
The lawsuit against Carnival Cruise Lines sheds light on the importance of thorough sanitation protocols and prompt action in addressing pest-related issues on board. With both parties engaged in legal proceedings, the outcome of the case will likely prompt a review of existing pest control measures in the cruise industry.
