Initially established as a drive-thru safari park known as The Wildlife Preserve in 1974, Six Flags America evolved over the years to offer a plethora of attractions, including the Hurricane Harbor water park, boasting over 100 rides, shows, slides, and roller coasters. The decision to close the park is a strategic move by the company to tackle its debt and undergo a restructuring process aimed at long-term growth.
Richard A. Zimmerman, the current president and CEO of Six Flags Entertainment Corporation, disclosed in a press release dated May 1st, “As part of our comprehensive review of our park portfolio, we have determined that Six Flags America and Hurricane Harbor are not a strategic fit with the company’s long-term growth plans.” The statement further noted the intention to market the property for redevelopment to maximize its value and return on investment.
Following the closure announcement, efforts are being made to provide support to the approximately 70 full-time associates employed at the park. The company has assured eligible associates of receiving severance packages and other benefits. As plans for the park’s rides and attractions remain uncertain, options such as relocation to other Six Flags parks or selling to alternative amusement park operators are being considered.
