Initially thought to be suffering from pneumonia, Jazzy’s symptoms were tragically misdiagnosed as a condition typically seen in men. Despite her mother’s efforts to seek medical help, the misinterpretation of her symptoms ultimately resulted in her passing.

The heartbreaking story begins when Jazzy was diagnosed with pneumonia on July 14, 2021, after presenting symptoms such as shortness of breath and a worsening cough. Following the diagnosis, she was prescribed prednisone by her primary care doctor. However, as her condition continued to deteriorate, Jazzy’s mother, Lyndsey Sutherland, took her to Mid Coast Medical Group on July 26. At this point, Jazzy had developed concerning physical symptoms including enlarged, swollen, firm, and discolored breasts, along with distended veins across her chest and neck.

At the medical facility, a physician dismissed Jazzy’s symptoms as a reaction to the steroid medication she had been given, misdiagnosing her with gynecomastia, a condition typically associated with men using anabolic steroids. Despite the alarming physical changes, Jazzy was sent home without further treatment or tests. Tragically, her condition worsened over the following days, prompting her mother to rush her to the emergency room just five days later.

Upon her arrival at the emergency room, imaging revealed a significant accumulation of fluid in Jazzy’s chest. She was swiftly transferred to Maine Medical Center and admitted to the pediatric intensive care unit. However, despite the medical team’s efforts, Jazzy suffered cardiac arrest and passed away on August 1, 2021, just two weeks before her 16th birthday. It was later revealed that the fluid buildup was a result of acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), a type of cancer affecting the blood and bone marrow.

In the aftermath of this devastating loss, Jazzy’s mother, Lyndsey Sutherland, took legal action against Mid Coast Medical Group, alleging negligence in her daughter’s care. According to Sutherland’s lawyer, Meryl Poulin, Jazzy’s leukemia was highly treatable at the time and could have been addressed with proper assessment during her visits to the medical facility. Poulin described Jazzy’s death as “senseless and completely avoidable,” highlighting the profound impact of the misdiagnosis on the family.

Despite the legal proceedings, Mid Coast Medical Group did not respond to requests for comment on the matter. Following a legal battle, a jury ruled in favour of Sutherland, awarding her $10 million for wrongful death and an additional $15 million for pain and suffering.
