O.A.R., also known as Of a Revolution, is commemorating three decades as a band with their upcoming Three Decades Tour set to kick off in June. The ’90s rock band, originating from Rockville, Md., has come a long way since their humble beginnings as a group of friends who simply wanted to perform in their eighth-grade talent show. In anticipation of this milestone, the band members opened up about their journey and shared insights with PEOPLE in an exclusive interview.

Reflecting on their longstanding bond, Richard On shared, “We all started out as friends and it started out as us just wanting to be a band to play in the eighth grade talent show.” Lead vocalist Marc Roberge added, “We’ve been together so long relative to how long we’ve been on this planet that all the natural phases that our lives are going through, we’re going through simultaneously.” The camaraderie amongst band members has been a key factor in their success, with Roberge expressing contentment in their collective achievements.
Initially inspired by Pearl Jam, whom they emulated for their eighth-grade performance of “Porch,” the band has evolved over the years, garnering a devoted fan base that spans generations. Jerry DePizzo shared, “We’ll be out there playing all of the songs that O.A.R. fans know and love throughout the decades. And then we’ve also been working really hard in the studio for new material as well.” The band’s commitment to both their classic hits and new music reflects their dedication to continuous growth and creativity.
In conjunction with the tour announcement, O.A.R. released a fresh single titled “Where We Are Now” on October 30, encapsulating the nostalgia and sentiments associated with their 30-year milestone. The track, written a few years prior, resonates with themes of gratitude and interconnectedness. Roberge elaborated, “You’re really saying, ‘Look, I thought I was going alone in this life.’ You realize you’re never alone. And all these people that raise you up and they bring you to where you need to be, that’s your town.” The song serves as a poignant reminder of the support system that has propelled the band forward.
As they gear up for the upcoming tour, commencing on June 19 in Vail, Colo., the band is prioritising their well-being to deliver an exceptional live experience. Drummer Chris Culos stressed the importance of maintaining a high standard in performance quality, alongside considerations for their personal lives and responsibilities. Emphasising a holistic approach to their musical endeavours, O.A.R. aims for longevity in their career trajectory.
In the midst of their music pursuits, the band members find solace in recreational activities and downtime among friends. DePizzo highlighted the significance of balancing work and leisure, citing golf outings and sports events as favoured pastimes. The band’s mutual admiration for professional athletes and musicians underscores their multifaceted interests and affirms their bond beyond music.
Tickets for the Three Decades Tour will be available for purchase starting Friday, November 7 at 10 a.m. local time, offering fans an opportunity to witness O.A.R.’s enduring legacy on stage.
