Russell Crowe, known for his compelling performances on the big screen, is showcasing another side of his talent as the frontman of a rock band. In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE at the AFI Fest premiere of his latest movie ‘Nuremberg’, Crowe shared insights into how his music endeavours bring him comfort amidst his acting career.

The 61-year-old actor, who stars in ‘Nuremberg’ portraying real-life Nazi leader Hermann Göring, revealed that his rock band, recently rebranded as Indoor Garden Party, serves as a creative outlet that offers him a unique sense of freedom. Crowe explained, “It’s my theater. I’ve done straight theater, I’ve done musical theater and I’ve done all that. But I started playing in rock and roll bands, and it’s a very easy point of comfort.”

Contrary to the structured environment of a film set, Crowe finds solace in the unpredictability of live music performances with his band. Describing the exhilarating experience, he shared, “When I step out on a rock and roll stage, it’s anarchy. I don’t know what’s going to happen. That’s why I do it. It’s that kind of unknown factor response from the audience and what you create together between the band and the audience is slightly different every time.”
With albums like ‘The Musical’ and ‘Prose And Cons’ under their belt, Indoor Garden Party has established a unique identity in the music scene. Crowe’s passion for music shines through as he emphasises the spontaneous and dynamic nature of live performances, a stark contrast to the meticulous planning involved in his acting projects.
Amidst his musical pursuits, Crowe continues to captivate audiences with his compelling portrayal of historical figures on-screen. In ‘Nuremberg’, he delves into the complexities of Hermann Göring’s character, exploring the nuances of power and manipulation. The actor reflected on the role, stating, “Charm is one of the most effective weapons of evil.”
Co-starring with talented actors like Rami Malek, who plays the role of Douglas Kelley, the psychiatrist challenging Göring, Crowe’s performance in ‘Nuremberg’ has been met with critical acclaim. The film, directed by James Vanderbilt, presents a riveting narrative that delves into the aftermath of the Nazi regime and the pursuit of justice.
As ‘Nuremberg’ hits theatres on November 7, audiences can expect a thought-provoking and engaging cinematic experience that showcases Crowe’s versatility as an actor. With upcoming projects like ‘The Last Druid’ and ‘Unabom’, Crowe’s dedication to his craft and passion for storytelling are evident in his diverse roles both on and off the stage.
In a world where entertainment serves as a medium for introspection and exploration, Russell Crowe continues to push boundaries and challenge conventions, embodying the essence of a true artist who finds inspiration in every facet of his creative journey.
