Scales, born in Surrey in 1932, began her acting career at the Bristol Old Vic in 1951 before transitioning to plays and films throughout the ’50s and ’60s. However, it was her role as Sybil Fawlty in the BBC series “Fawlty Towers” that truly catapulted her to fame. The sitcom, created by John Cleese and Connie Booth, aired in 1975 and 1979 and remains a beloved classic to this day.

Despite only running for two series with a total of 12 episodes, “Fawlty Towers” continues to be hailed as one of the greatest British TV programs of all time, showcasing Scales’ impeccable comedic timing and talent. Her portrayal of the sharp-tongued and long-suffering Sybil Fawlty alongside Cleese’s Basil Fawlty left a lasting impression on audiences worldwide.

In addition to her acting career, Scales was also recognised for her portrayal of Queen Elizabeth II in the television play “A Question of Attribution,” which earned her a BAFTA nomination. Her contributions to the entertainment industry were further honoured when she was appointed a CBE (Commander of the Order of the British Empire) in the 1992 Queen’s Birthday Honours List.
Scales’ marriage to actor Timothy West, which began in 1963, was a partnership both on and off-screen. The couple shared their love for acting and adventure in the Channel 4 documentary series “Great Canal Journeys” from 2014 to 2019. West’s passing in November 2024 was a profound loss for Scales, yet she continued to embody strength and resilience in the face of adversity.
